The Buddhism Support for Cambodia organization, headquartered in Chik Dey Village, Andoung Trabek Commune, Romeas Haek District, Svay Rieng Province, plays a crucial role in fostering the religious practices of Brahmanism and Buddhism among its followers. This organization unites Buddhist practitioners across seven provinces, including Svay Rieng, Prey Veng, Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, Siem Reap, Kratie, and Stung Treng, representing approximately 95% of its membership. The cultural and social structures within these provinces reflect a rich tapestry of Buddhist traditions that deeply intertwine with local customs and practices. Economically, the organization's initiatives contribute to community development, while politically, it serves as a voice for the rights and needs of its followers, illustrating the significant influence of Buddhism in shaping social cohesion and resilience in these areas.

Project Target

In recent efforts to reshape the religious landscape in Cambodia, the government has intensified policies aimed at diminishing the roles of Buddhist monks and teachers in targeted provinces including Svay Rieng, Prey Veng, Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, Siem Reap, Kratie, and Stung Treng. These initiatives lack a clear disciplinary framework, particularly in educating youths to embrace Buddhism and brahmanism. Simultaneously, there is a push to conserve national culture, aligning with the motto of conservation and redevelopment, particularly in Svay Rieng province. This dual approach raises questions about the preservation of cultural identity and the future of Buddhism in these regions, as the government navigates the challenges of promoting religious diversity while attempting to maintain its cultural heritage.

In recent years, there has been a concerted effort to implement policies aimed at reducing the influence of Buddhist monks and teachers, as well as monastery commissions, without adhering to established disciplines. This approach particularly affects the education of youth in becoming Buddhist monks and nurturing their beliefs in Brahmanism and Buddhism across several targeted provinces, including Svay Rieng, Prey Veng, Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, Siem Reap, Kratie, and Stung Treng. In light of these changes, there is a pressing need to conserve and promote national culture in alignment with the national motto of conservation and redevelopment, especially within the province of Svay Rieng. Such efforts are crucial for maintaining the rich cultural heritage and spiritual identity of these regions amidst shifting policies and societal dynamics.
